Guides (How to…)
Step by step guides outlining the questions I am commonly asked by entrepreneurs, and some of the projects I’ve worked on for enterprises.
I wrote these “How to Guides” and put them online so you can have a go yourself and give it your best shot. I don’t ask for your email address, because I don’t have the desire or the time to bombard you with endless emails. Instead you get the information for free. If you need help you can Call, Text, or Book a Call Back , or you can Hire Me.
Each Guide Follows a Logical Path
I love cooking food for people. Recipes today are so good. All you have to do is search for what you want to eat, find a recipe, buy the ingredients, follow the steps, next thing you know your friends and family are eating your creations and thinking you are a professional chef!
Business not that much different. It is why people buy franchises and licenses to operate. They buy proven methods, systems, processes, and branding.
I am an Investigator and Analyst. My “How to… Guides” are like recipes, you have the method, but you must get your own ingredients (documents). Or you can Hire Me to work on your project and I will bring all the documents with me.
Consider the Questions
Each “How to… Guide” is a series of questions grouped under a specific topic.
As Investigators - we are taught to ask: Who, What, When, Where, How, Why. We obtain facts and evidence and then compile it all into a Factual Report.
As Business Analysts - we are taught to “elicit requirements”, and to do that we have to ask questions, but we ask those questions in a different way than an investigator would, more conversational - "As a user I want to be able to..."
As Risk / Opportunity Analysts - we are taught to put numbers around it all, run qualitative and quantitative analysis. Standard risk analysis “heat maps”, are OK to provide a quick overview of risks. But to crunch data for those heat maps you really need to build Risk / Opportunity Models using Spreadsheets.
You can then take that to the next level by building Bayesian Networks so you can then apply probability theorem (Bayes Theorem) to model causality between risks and opportunities.
We can then use the Risk / Opportunity models to brainstorm scenarios to forecast risk and opportunity, so we get a "heads up" about future possibilities. If we maintain those models with live data, we can then use the models to help us make better informed decisions.
If you crunch the data in a spreadsheet with for example, Monte Carlo analysis, and feed the results into a live Bayesian Network, the network will run the probabilities and provide you with a percentage probability of an outcome.
The more live data you feed in the more accurate the Bayesian Network becomes. For many businesses, this system is a real game-changer.
At the end of every step are Tips, Checklists, Worksheets, Agreements, Press Releases, and Spreadsheets. They are the ingredients.
The internet is a big wide world. Google those titles see what you get. They are the broad overview of what you might need. Of course, there are others, but I do not have time to list every possibility.
Of course, when you Hire Me, I bring all those document templates with me. Just having me on the team, will save you save loads of time and money.
Consider Only the Documents You'll Need
I’ve provided an overview of some of the documents you ‘might’ need. Every person, business, and market are different, so I can’t provide an ‘absolute’ recipe. You know your business, so pick and choose the documents that are right for your business.
Give it Your Best Shot
I give my Nephews this advice: “Learn how you learn. Learn how to teach yourself. Learn how to find information”. Then have a go yourself, if (when) you get stuck and need help, then ask for help. The important thing is you had a go yourself and got as far as you could.
Competent people do not need managing, they just need leadership, and an agile environment, where they are resourced to do their best work, and give things their best shot.
I have led a team of 90 into the field during disaster recovery, managed a field office of 300 independent contractors, and built a contractor workforce of 1600 with 1200 active and 900 deployed in the field at any one time.
Managing systems and processed is easy, leading people is easy too. Managing people, why would you? Hire the most competent people and let them manage themselves. Explain what needs to be achieved, agree on a time-line (sprint), provide the resources, and leave them too it. Be available to answer questions and provide help, then get out in front and remove the roadblocks.
I wrote these “How to… Guides” to give you some information so that you can have a go yourself. I am a big fan of bootstrapping, you can trace that back to my upbringing, and you can see evidence of that in the work I have done all throughout my career.
Do not worry about “failing”. If you never give up, you never fail. You can pivot, but the best plan is to start every idea by Building a Business Case (guide out Nov 2020).
Developing a new product or service or building a business takes loads of time. I have dropped 500 hours on a Business Case for a “great idea” just to work out it was a load of shit. That’s perfectly fine. No hard money lost, just time (3 months of time over a 12-month period).
Of course, time is money, but I would rather find out in the beginning with only a time-cost, than 12 months down the track after hundreds of thousands of dollars dropped on an idea before the pivot.
The Build a Business Case Guide is your best friend. At the end of that guide, you'll have a validated business idea, ready to be pitched to managers, or financiers, or clients.
I see people pushing forward with ideas like those I have discarded because the Business Case did not stack up. They did not run a Business Case, so they do not know the numbers (risk & finance). So, they get started and then they pivot, which is OK, depending on the percentage of resources consumed along the way before the pivot.
But if they invested the time to develop a proper Business Case, crunched the numbers, got on the phone talking to potential customers, performed market research, and conducted light-weight low-cost experiments, then they would have started in a much stronger position that they did, and would not have expended resources.
My How to Guides are designed to give you the recipes you need for many of the common business tasks. I want you to have a go yourself. Along the way you might get stuck, need a bit of help, or want me to get onboard with your team to help push things forward.
That's cool. I am ready for that. There are two ways you can contract my help and support.
Call or Text – it is easy as. Call me on +64 20 4165 4856. If I don't answer its because im working on a client project, so Text Me your Name and Number and I will call you back as soon as I can.
Book a Call Back - just fill out the online booking form and I will call you back at the booked time. The first 15-minute call back is free. Thereafter every call back comes at a cost. The cost is a percentage of my standard hourly rate. You can book call backs for 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.
Hire Me – after call backs you can Hire Me. You are booking me for a period at a set future date. During that time, I work exclusively for you.
I Work 10 hours a day – Monday to Thursday for clients (Friday is my Admin). When you book some of my time, we can schedule that for a 10 hour block up to a 120-hour block (three four day weeks at 10 hours a day), or you can spread my time over 6 or 12 months.
If you need more than 120 hours, then we will need to negotiate how that will work. I am currently booked one week every month with no end point.
Established Obligations - I have long-term service and support contracts with clients. When you Hire Me, I will outline those contracts and my obligations and we can negotiate an agreement that works for you, keeps my current clients happy, and works for me.
Call, Text, or Book a Call Back!
Absolutely. We begin with an 'empty' document template that is 80% complete and add your relevant information to it. Each client engagement starts with documents that have never been used before.
If so, then you can Hire Me, then we sign the privacy documents and non-disclosure document and client engagement contract. Those documents protect us both. Then we get started on whatever your project involves.
